Facebook is by far the most popular social network, 72% of online Americans are on the site. Three quarters of those are women, and largely under 30. However older internet users are the largest growing demographic. If you are new to social media (personal or business) this is the first site I would recommend.
Twitter allows users to send short tweets consisting of 140 characters. 23% of adult internet users are on Twitter. Users tend to be under 50 and live in urban areas. Twitter is a great resource for small bits of information or teases.
Instagram is for sharing photos and videos. Content is generally user generated rather than shared from another source. Most users are female and under 30. A photo or video on Instagram is worth 1,000 Facebook posts!
YouTube is owned by Google which makes it very important! Each month, YouTube reaches over 82% of internet users in the United States. 98% of internet users between 18 – 24 years old accessed the site in the last month. Almost 20 million visitors per month are over 65 years old. If you have a message, YouTube is the place to get it to your audience.
Pinterest is a photo sharing app & website. It’s a "catalog of ideas," rather than as a social network, that inspires users to go out and do (or buy) that thing. Pinterest has more than 1 billion regular users, most of whom are women ages 35 – 44. Nearly 75% of Pinterest users have purchased something on the platform or because of the platform.
Google+ reached 10 million users just two weeks after their launch in 2011. After a month, it reached 25 million; now it has over 300 million active users. Most of the users are college educated males. Google+ profiles are used as the background account for many Google Services including YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps, Android, Google Play, Google Music, Google Voice, Google Wallet, Google Local and more.
Snapchat is an image messaging and multimedia mobile application. Snaps which can consist of a photo or a short video, and can be edited to include filters and effects, text captions, and drawings. Snapchat's main demographic has consisted of millennials but is quickly being adopted by internet users over 30.
